Google will pay for improvement of someone else's programs

The Google company started campaign for awarding of researchers who bring improvements in "free" (extended on the open-source model) the software. Improved programs not necessarily have to be projects of Google, is spoken in the company blog.

The award for the completions brought in projects, will make from 500 to 3133,7 US dollars. For simple messages on "bugs" and vulnerabilities of Google the award isn't provided. The researcher has to or offer an innovation improving work of the program, or if "hole" is found, to eliminate it.

The first stage of the program covers some projects. These are network services (OpenSSH, BIND, ISC DHCP), parsers of images (libjpeg, libjpeg-turbo, libpng, giflib), free projects on the basis of Chrome (Chromium, Blink), OpenSSL and zlib libraries and important components of a kernel of Linux. Further the list of projects can be expanded.

To apply for an award, the researcher has to send at first the message on the completions to founders of the project, and only after that to write to Google. Reports are accepted on the e-mail address security-patches@google.com. It is possible to study the full version of rules of campaign here.

New campaign doesn't cancel programs of awarding already existing in Google. The company since November, 2010 pays to users for messages on vulnerabilities in the products and services. In three years of Google transferred to "searchers" over two million US dollars.
